České Budějovice are planning a second outdoor swimming pool

České Budějovice - České Budějovice could have a second summer swimming pool within five years. The mayor of the city, Miroslav Tetter, announced this today at the ceremonial reopening of the summer swimming pool at Sokolský Island. The second facility could be built in the Máj housing estate.
    The total reconstruction cost 73 million crowns, but this amount also includes costs for new attractions such as long slides. The city funded 16 million crowns, while the rest for the reconstruction came from European Union grants.
    According to the mayor, one summer swimming pool is not enough to accommodate demand; public interest is significantly greater. "Especially on summer days when many tourists come to České Budějovice," Tetter stated. The newly opened repaired summer swimming pool at Sokolský Island can welcome up to 1400 visitors per hour. The facility had the same capacity even before the reconstruction. Since it is located near the city center, there were no other areas for the summer pool to expand. "That’s why we urgently need another one," Tetter said.
    The city plans to build a new summer swimming pool in the Máj housing estate. This is an area where tens of thousands of people live. "We have a clear idea of what the swimming pool should look like. However, we do not yet see funding for the project. But I believe that funding will be found in the future, and above all, it won't take long," Tetter added.
    The newly opened summer swimming pool in České Budějovice at Sokolský Island welcomed visitors after almost a year of closure. The facility previously suffered from various deficiencies; the pool's skeleton was reportedly not securely anchored in the ground, and water was seeping into the nearby Vltava River. Therefore, the city decided to repair the swimming pool. "However, during the reconstruction, we encountered other problems; there was a greater thickness of concrete under the pool's floor than was indicated in the documentation, and it took us some time to remove it," said František Jelen, the deputy mayor of České Budějovice. He is convinced that the operation of the summer swimming pool will last for many years without major interventions.
    The summer swimming pool in České Budějovice will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
