Olomouc – The massive sculpture titled Cosmic Boulder by sculptor Michal Gabriel was installed today after noon with the help of a crane in the historic center of Olomouc, immediately capturing the attention of passersby, residents, and tourists. The three-meter-high artwork invites visitors to Gabriel's exhibition at the Mona Lisa Gallery in Olomouc, which will last until September 5.
"The Cosmic Boulder is brought to Earth without a catastrophe that would represent such a visit in reality. The hollow sculpture made of stainless steel is placed in the space like a menhir. The inner space remains inaccessible to the viewer," Gabriel described his work.
The surface of the sculpture, resembling a cosmic body, is made up of a structure of steel slats that optically changes with the alteration of light in the surroundings. "It thus appears like a materialized hologram," Gabriel pointed out, whose imposing artwork weighs six tons.
Sixty-year-old Michal Gabriel is one of the most significant sculptors of the current generation. His work is inspired by figure, exotic flora, and fauna. He is one of the co-founders of the art group Tvrdohlaví and is the head of the Sculpture Studio at VUT in Brno.
