BRNO - The Brno city council approved a ten-million crown contribution for the preparation of the Janáček Cultural Centre construction. Today, Deputy Mayor Jan Holík informed the media about this. The multipurpose building with a new concert hall for the Brno State Philharmonic will be built on the site of the current parking lot between Veselá and Besední streets. According to city hall spokesman Pavel Žára, it is still unclear how the actual construction, costing more than one billion crowns, will be financed. The city is waiting for private investors, ČTK was told.
Brno has reserved 198 million crowns in its budget for the actual construction of the cultural center. However, following the architectural competition, the initial cost estimate was 1.75 billion. The new, more modest variant will cost 1.2 billion crowns. "For example, the adjacent Besední house is sufficient for the musicians' facilities," believes Holík.
The city council aims to have the project documentation completed intentionally. "So that we are prepared for situations that occasionally arise, that some money appears and can only be used in a short and limited time," Holík said.
The maximalist variant of the building includes a concert hall for 1500 spectators and its facilities. The modified variant plans to have commercial spaces capable of independent operation along both shorter axes of the building. The minimized variant reduces the number of parking spaces in the building's garage, and a department store would be created on Veselá Street to financially support the center.
