Brno - Brno plans to build an underpass for cyclists under Kaštanová Street and also a footbridge estimated to cost 11.5 million crowns. This would connect the cycle path running along the banks of the Svitava River, which crosses Kaštanová Street. The aim is to provide greater comfort and safety for cyclists, said Brno's transport councilor Tomáš Kratochvíl (ODS) to reporters.
The councilor approved the preparation of the investment proposal. Kaštanová Street connects Brno with municipalities located southeast of the city. The cycle path crosses a busy street at the bridge. "Approximately 22,000 cars travel on Kaštanová every day. In the case of building the underpass, it is possible to connect it with the cycle path via a footbridge. This would enable a direct connection to the cycle path that runs along the left bank of the Svitava River," Kratochvíl stated.
According to him, the grade-separated intersection can be built without interfering with the foundations of the bridge's pillars due to the structural arrangement. "The underpass will not restrict traffic on Kaštanová Street in any way," Kratochvíl added.
The project preparation, including the construction of the underpass, is expected to take about two years and will cost an estimated 7.5 million crowns. About 80 meters behind the bridge, a footbridge for cyclists is expected to connect to the underpass. "The structure of the footbridge will be 26 meters long and four meters wide. Behind the footbridge's structure, there will be a connection to the existing cycle path running along the left bank of the Svitava," Kratochvíl added. The footbridge is expected to cost around four million crowns.
