Brno – Brno wants to issue a change to the zoning plan that will allow the construction of a scientific-research campus called Mendel Quarter near Porgesova Street. This was stated to journalists today by the councilor for urban planning, Filip Chvátal (KDU-ČSL). According to him, this would create a third campus in Brno after Masaryk University and VUT. A private entity is planning it near Mendel University. According to Jiřina Studenková from Mendel University, this is not a university project. In addition, Brno is planning two land-use studies for the development of the Palcary locations and along Holzova Street.

The councilors recommend to the representatives that they issue a change to the zoning plan concerning the area between General Píky Avenue and Porgesova Street. "The aim is to enable the construction of a scientific-research campus called Mendel Quarter, including the development of housing and accommodation for employees, interns, and consultants of this institution," stated Chvátal.

In addition, the city will have two land-use studies developed for the growth of two locations. The land-use studies are the first of 27 that are a condition for the new zoning plan, in which these areas are currently left only in general terms. One study concerns the area along Holzova Street in Líšeň, where housing construction is planned. "It is necessary to define more detailed spatial regulation. Furthermore, it is important to create public infrastructure, relaxation areas, greenery, and necessary public amenities," said Chvátal. According to him, important will be the traffic connection to Bratří Šmardů and Borkovcova Streets and ensuring permeability from Holzova Street.

The second land-use study concerns the Palcary area near the Brno Zoo and the natural floodplain of the Svratka River. "Thanks to the study, the city and the city district will gain a proposal for meaningful development of the given area, which contains an unused brownfield, the site of a former cooperative farm. It will be necessary to take into account the requirements of local government and propose a balanced composition of functional areas, so that a mixed-use location is created," said Chvátal.
