Brno - A new pond may be dug among the playgrounds under the housing estate in Brno-New Lískovec. The designers would like to channel rainwater from the roofs of the surrounding panel houses into it. The pond would enliven the area, and a footbridge is planned to run over part of it in the future. This way, the city would also manage to retain part of the water in the landscape during rainfalls, said Deputy Mayor Martin Ander to journalists today.
"This area has long been struggling with the problem of inadequate drainage, and any channeling of rainwater into the sewer means depleting its content," the politician stated. The construction of the pond can also be considered a flood protection measure, as, during heavy rains, the water from the roofs of the estate will remain and will not flow into the Leskava stream, where it could then cause flood damage.
The sports and recreational area Pod Plachtami was established in New Lískovec over the past six years. On the area that remained fallow after the completion of the panel housing estate, the neighborhood built, for example, a soccer field, a small stadium for softball, a BMX bike facility, and a cycling track.
Now, the area is to be completed with park landscaping. Its intended components include, in addition to the construction of a pond, also planting greenery and terrain modifications. The costs are estimated at 8.2 million crowns, and the city aims to obtain a grant from European Union funds for the project. "The call is open until the end of January next year, and we are working on getting Brno to submit this project," Ander said.
