BRNO - The complicated traffic situation in the city parts of Židenice and Vinohrady should be resolved by a new tunnel. Both city parts are advocating for its construction instead of the original proposal, which in the eastern part of the city planned to route the so-called large city circuit through Rokytova and Žarošická streets. This intention has been successfully changed, and both parts have already approved the change in the zoning plan, said today to ČTK the mayor of Vinohrady, Jiří Čejka. However, the change will still have to be discussed by the Brno city council. "It will probably be addressed in May," specified Čejka. In case of approval, the construction of the tunnel, which would start in the area of today's Rokytova street and exit onto Jedovnická street towards Černovická terrace, could be realized as early as 2015, the mayor estimated. Much sooner, however, residents of Brno will be using the new tunnel in the Dobrovského area, which is expected to be completed by 2010. The construction with two road tubes will cost more than seven billion crowns. Brno is set to invest about 400 million crowns into relocating existing and building new engineering networks, while additional funds will come from the budget of the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. The Dobrovského tunnel will connect to the intersections in Žabovřesky and at the so-called Svitavy radial. The first tube will run along the axis of Veleslavínova, Dobrovského, and Žabovřeská streets, while the second will run parallel 60 to 80 meters further south in the extended axis of Pešinova street. Part of the construction also includes the building of two connecting grade-separated intersections.
