Brno – The capacity of student dormitories at universities in Brno has been filled since August, with Masaryk University and the Brno University of Technology recording over 2000 applicants who did not receive a bed. They must therefore seek accommodation elsewhere, most often in rented apartments. Rents in Brno have increased by one-tenth compared to last year, with applicants paying on average 1890 crowns more for the same apartment year-on-year.

"We have 1500 more applications than we have beds again," said VUT spokesman Kubíček. Nearly 800 students are facing a similar problem at Masaryk University. "We record these numbers despite the fact that we have been regularly increasing the capacity of beds for first-year students in recent years," said Masaryk University spokesman Radim Sajbot. Smaller Mendel University has managed to satisfy the demand for dormitory beds, according to spokesperson Tereza Pospíchalová.

Students search for vacant apartments in Brno every year at the end of summer. "In August this year, there was an average of 40 interested parties per advertisement in Brno," said Brož. Many apartment owners are looking for student tenants independently through advertisements and the internet. "It was not a problem to find students for the apartment, and I was only looking through Facebook groups," said Karel Mikulenka, an apartment owner in a suburban Brno district. Students most often look for two- to four-room apartments with non-passing rooms near schools or transport hubs.

VUT student Matěj Pražák actively searched for housing in an apartment for three months. "I even received an offer for a shared room that also served as a kitchen. In the end, I was lucky and managed to find a spot in a shared room in an excellent location for 5000 crowns, including utilities, through a friend," said Pražák. According to the companies surveyed, the average housing costs for one student are higher, but it depends on the location, size of the apartment, and related energy costs.

The price list for accommodation in dormitories will not change at any of the contacted universities in the upcoming academic year. At Masaryk University, a student pays on average just under 5000 crowns per month. The situation is similar at other schools.
