Brno - The housing estate in the Brno district of Starý Lískovec has gained a new center. The central space has transformed the area near the health clinic. Previously, the place was neglected and dotted with makeshift sales stalls. An investment of more than 20 million crowns changed that; today, there is new paving, benches, and a water feature, Mayor Vladan Krásný (ODS) told reporters today.
"It is a central place in Starý Lískovec, where there are shops and a post office and relatively many people go there,” said Krásný. According to him, the renovation of the space will continue with further stages, which, however, will not be as fundamental and will mostly affect the surroundings. Two will concern parking, and another will address sidewalks near the nearby transfer hub, Osová.
The area near the health clinic serves as a sort of temporary center for the district. After revitalization, Mikuláškov Square is to become a place where people can meet and which they will perceive as the center of the district. It is much larger than the space by the health clinic. However, final adjustments cannot be made there now because a tram track is planned to go underneath the square in the future, which will be dug from above.
According to the prepared study, a new town hall building with a community hall is also to be constructed on Mikuláškov Square. There is none in the district at present; for example, councilors meet in a fire station in a room that is more reminiscent of a school classroom. According to Krásný, a multifunctional circular structure built according to ecological trends will stand in the middle of the square. The surroundings are to be transformed by gardeners into a French park.
The construction would complete the effort to turn Starý Lískovec into a cohesive urban district. It mainly consists of panel housing, and the district is additionally surrounded by multi-lane roads and a highway. According to Krásný, Lískovec could humorously be described as a concrete jungle with old buildings. "We need to cultivate and beautify the environment from within so that people from the gray housing estate do not want to run away,” he stated earlier. According to him, this is the only possible way to prevent the estate from becoming a socially excluded area.
