Prague - The Church of Our Lady Victorious on Prague's White Mountain will be completely renovated, and the Benedictines have gathered 15 million CZK in a public collection. The walls have already been dehumidified, and the concrete has been replaced with tiles; lighting has been added to the courtyard, the electrical installation has been repaired, and the crosses and domes of the towers have been gilded, and the windows have been restored. The church also has a new facade and interior painting. This was reported today by Sister Petra Pavlíčková from the order. Most of the remaining work is expected to be completed by 2020, when the pilgrimage site will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Battle of White Mountain. The church complex on White Mountain is a national cultural monument.

"When we were entrusted with the site eleven years ago, its condition was deplorable. There was literally a grim atmosphere here. The plaster was peeling everywhere, the courtyard was overgrown with moss, and the frescoes were damaged, among many other issues," said Pavlíčková, who has dedicated several years to the restoration of the pilgrimage site.

A community of four nuns has settled in the local rectory and has begun to engage not only in the social life of the local parish but also in necessary rescue work and fundraising for repairs. Their first success was paying for the dehumidification of the walls and replacing the concrete with tiles.

The Benedictines plan to complete most of the repairs in two years. However, they still do not have funds for some rescue work. "This mainly concerns the restoration of the rare frescoes in the cloister. In the past, someone tried to save them, but it didn't go too well," said Pavlíčková. The historical paintings have been attacked by mold due to unprofessional intervention.

After the construction and restoration work is completed, the Benedictines wish to make the site more accessible to the public. They are already organizing lectures, concerts, and guided tours.

The church's restoration has been made possible by donations from parishioners as well as help from generous benefactors. "It's almost unbelievable, but over the years, we have gathered an amount close to fifteen million," said Pavlíčková. Often, it was a matter of saving small amounts, while sometimes benefactors contributed. Among them were, for example, MP and honorary chairman of TOP 09 Karel Schwarzenberg and the founder of Eco-Investment Milan Fiľo. "I am a believer myself, so it is natural for me to contribute to the restoration of the church," he stated.

The pilgrimage site of Our Lady Victorious stands at the site of the Battle of White Mountain. The main initiator of its construction was Prague painter and miniaturist Christian Luna. The baroque monument is associated with several well-known names. According to some sources, among those involved in the construction of the historical complex was architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichl. The creator of the entrance portal was probably builder Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.
