The Vienna International Center (VIC) in the 23rd district of Vienna, known primarily as UNO-City, is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this week. Vienna, alongside New York, Geneva, and Nairobi, is one of the quartet of official UN headquarters. On the occasion of the celebrations, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is expected in the metropolis on Friday.
Exactly thirty years ago, the UN moved into UNO-City. Since then, the 180,000 m² extensive complex has not been Austrian state territory, but has extraterritorial status. The site houses six organizations and employs 5,000 staff. For example, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), as well as an office managing outer space, which oversees the registry of all objects flying in space from Vienna, operate there.
The author of the complex, which was built in the 1970s, is architect Johann Staber. The complex consists of six tower-like buildings. The central building is the conference center.
On the occasion of the celebrations, guided tours of the administrative building were offered for free. Visitors entering the Vienna UN premises must present a passport.
