Sioux Falls (USA) - A team of scientists is using laser beams to attempt to capture an exact three-dimensional likeness of one of the most significant American national monuments - the giant faces of four American presidents carved into the granite of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. According to the AP agency, the goal is to create a millimeter-precise three-dimensional model that could serve for potential repairs in the future. The model is also intended for educational programs and virtual tours. The research is part of the CyArk project, which has transformed, for example, the statues on Easter Island, the ruins of the Italian city of Pompeii, Egyptian Thebes, or the Hindu temple of Angkor Wat in northwestern Cambodia into 3D virtual representations. The project is overseen by the Ben and Barbara Kacyra Foundation, which has set the protection of the world’s cultural heritage as one of its goals.
