A new center for contemporary photography has been opened in Vienna - the OstLicht gallery. Its program will focus on artists and art groups from abroad as well as from home, both young and established creators. It is a new space with an exhibition hall, a library, a bar, and a gallery shop.
The library has a collection of 20,000 books and magazines. These focus on the areas of art, techniques, and theory of photography spanning from the late 19th century to the present. OstLicht is a new project by Peter Coeln, who has successfully operated the WestLicht photography museum for 10 years. This museum presents outstanding international and domestic photographic exhibitions, is known for its permanent exhibition of historical cameras, and hosts unique auctions "WestLicht - Photographica Auctions." The architect of the OstLicht gallery is Gregor Eichinger, who utilized the industrial character of the premises. The original building of the Anker bakery offers 800 m², with 400 m² of exhibition space. The premises also house a branch of the company Lichterloh, the Brot-Kunsthalle of Ernst Hilger, art studios, and the "Caritas" workshop.
The inaugural exhibition of the OstLicht gallery is titled "NACHT" (Night) and will be on view until September 29, 2012.
