Accra - Nearly 300 meters high, the building that will be the tallest in Africa is to form a new center of computing technology in Ghana. The construction of the City of Hope center, which began this week, is expected to finish within three years, according to the Ghanaian government on its website.
The complex of six high-rise buildings is being constructed from scratch near the Ghanaian capital Accra. The tallest of the six towers will reach a height of 270 meters, making it the tallest in Africa, the government stated. The project is estimated to cost 196 billion crowns and, according to investors, will provide jobs for 50,000 people and housing for 25,000 individuals.
The Ghanaian president John Mahama stated that the construction of the center will be mainly led by private investors. "The government has stimulated (economic) growth with large investments since gaining independence (on March 6, 1957 from Britain)... now it's time for the private sector to step in," he said according to the BBC.
One of the investors is the local technology giant RLG Communications, which aims to develop applications in the new center with the goal of building the largest assembly plant in the world focused on various products.
A similar project for a technology center was launched by Kenya in January. In the new city "Africa's Silicon Savannah," focused on computer technology and commerce, tens of thousands of workers are said to find jobs by 2030.
Currently, the tallest building in Africa, according to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is the 223 meter high Carlton Centre skyscraper in South Africa.
