Brasília - In Belo Horizonte, the capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, a large complex of administrative buildings designed by the famous Brazilian architect Óscar Niemeyer was ceremoniously inaugurated today. According to AFP, this project is considered one of the boldest that the now 102-year-old Niemeyer has created during his more than seventy-year career. The complex, built about 20 kilometers from the city center, covers an area of 804,000 square meters. It will house the offices of the state of Minas Gerais. It is named after the Brazilian politician Tancredo Neves, who was elected president in 1985 as an opposition candidate but fell seriously ill the day before his swearing-in and ultimately died. The complex consists of five buildings. One of them is the four-story Tiradentes Palace, which will be the seat of the state government. According to AFP, it is the largest reinforced concrete structure of its kind in the world. All buildings feature curves that are characteristic of Niemeyer and which, as he once said, pay tribute to the curves of Brazilian women. The architect visited the construction several times but did not attend today's inauguration. Niemeyer is the author of more than 600 architectural projects worldwide. He is best known for the buildings created in the late 1950s and early 1960s based on his designs in the then-new Brazilian capital of Brasília. His studio is also responsible for the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.
