Todd Saunders' Norwegian office designed a studio for artists for the Shorefast Foundation and Fogo Island Arts Corporation, which is part of a project where six architects were invited to design studios in six different locations on Fogo Island, Newfoundland, as part of the 2010 Arts Residency Program. Three of the six structures are nearing completion. One of them is by Canadian-born Todd Saunders collaborating with the local office Sheppard Case Architects. Their project, titled "The Long Studio," features a wooden structure that is bright white on the inside and clad in wooden slats on the outside to blend harmoniously with the surrounding rocky landscape. The elongated mass is enclosed only two-thirds of the way. A significant portion of the mass is taken up by a recessed terrace. At the front, there is a large window facing the coastal landscape. The structure hovers on slender columns above an irregular rocky cliff. For Saunders, the realization of the studio is a unique opportunity to experiment with traditional architectural forms, processes, and materials.
In addition to this project on the island, more art studios are gradually being created (Writers' Studio, Tower Studio, ...). All six structures are expected to be completed in 2012.
