Spanish architect Rafael Moneo celebrated his 70th birthday yesterday. Archiweb is therefore preparing to bring two of his older works and one fresh new project in the near future.
Rafael Moneo was born in 1937 in the Spanish city of Tudela. He studied architecture at the technical university ETSAM in Madrid, graduating in 1963. From the very beginning of his professional career, he focused on theory and teaching: he taught at ETSAM from 1980 to 1984 and directed the architecture school at Harvard from 1985 to 1990. In 1990, he opened his own practice in Madrid while also serving as a professor at Harvard. In 1996, he received the prestigious Pritzker Prize, and in 2001, his convention center in San Sebastian won the Mies van der Rohe Award.
The jury that awarded the Pritzker Prize eleven years ago wrote of Moneo: “He is an architect of incredibly broad range. Each of his buildings is unique, yet still recognizable as part of his rich palette. Moreover, he is an author whose architectural creation and theoretical teaching mutually develop.
