Amsterdam - The Netherlands is considering the possibility of expanding its densely populated and sea-threatened territory by building artificial islands off its coast. Local experts, commissioned by the Dutch government to find ways to better protect areas that are almost half below sea level from rising sea levels, presented the proposal today.
"We will discuss plans that could change the Netherlands forever," stated Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Maria van der Hoeven at a meeting with experts who met over the weekend in Scheveningen on the North Sea coast.
According to the plan, the islands would serve for housing, agriculture, sports, and the establishment of natural reserves. One large island would be in the shape of a tulip. They would be constructed by Dutch companies that participated in the project for the large artificial island in Dubai. The islands would improve living conditions in a country with one of the highest population densities.
In the Netherlands, which covers an area of 41,160 square kilometers, there are over 16.5 million inhabitants. For comparison, in the Czech Republic, which has a much larger area of 78,966 square kilometers, there are only 10.3 million inhabitants.
The plan also includes a number of technical measures to enhance dikes and other systems that protect the territory from the sea. The Dutch have not forgotten that in 1953, sea water breached the dikes and sudden floods killed around 1,800 people.
