Cultural Center Liangzhu by David Chipperfield

The London studio of David Chipperfield announced on its website at the end of last month that their cultural center in Liangzhu, China, has been completed. The museum concludes the northern part of the park, through which a mighty river flows. The cultural center will present and mediate the 5,000-year-old culture of Liangzhu to visitors, with archaeological findings exhibited in the museum. The museum is situated on an elevation that dominates the entire park. The man-made landscape fits excellently with the sculptural volumes of the new museum. Visitors approach the museum via a bridge that connects the parking lot with the entrance courtyard. From here, one can then venture into halls with temporary or permanent exhibitions. The building is divided into four square halls (each with an edge of 18 meters) with varying ceiling heights. Additionally, two large courtyards are inserted between the halls, linking the different exhibition sections. This allows visitors to move freely throughout the museum, and the interior spaces are sufficiently illuminated by natural light thanks to these courtyards.
