Ján Bahna elected president of the Association of Architects of Slovakia for the second time

On November 30, 2011, the General Assembly of the Union of Architects of Slovakia (SAS) took place in Bratislava. The agenda included an assessment of the activities of SAS over the past three years as well as the presentation of plans for the future. Participants of the General Assembly discussed the situation of architecture and the position of architects in contemporary society, the impacts of the economic crisis on the profession, domestic and foreign activities of SAS, annual awards of SAS, and the union's press. The participants of the General Assembly elected a president, vice presidents, and members of the SAS presidency for the upcoming three-year period. The newly reelected president is Professor Ján Bahna (born 1944), who will serve a second term in office. The vice presidents for the various regional associations of SAS are Štefan Šlachta for the Bratislava region, Jozef Istenes (Komárno) for the Western Slovakia region, Igor Teplan (Banská Bystrica) for the Central Slovakia region, and Václav Kohlmayer (Prešov) for the Eastern Slovakia region.
Professor, academic architect, Ing.arch. Ján Bahna, architect SKA Architect Ján Bahna was born on April 8, 1944, in Pukanec. He studied architecture at SVŠT in Bratislava from 1961-67 under Professor Jozef Lacko and at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1967-70 under Professor Vojtech Vilhan. From 1971 to 1978, he collaborated with Professor V. Vilhan. From 1971-89, he worked at the State Design Institute of Commerce. Since 1990, he has been leading a private AA architecture studio. In the same year, he joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava as the head of the Architecture III studio. In 1992, he completed his habilitation, and in 2008, he was inaugurated as a professor. He is a founding member of the Union of Architects of Slovakia and the Slovak Chamber of Architects. Since 2003, he has served in the Union of Architects of Slovakia as vice president for Bratislava. In 2008, he was elected president of SAS for the first time. Ján Bahna is a recipient of several architectural awards. Throughout his forty-year career, he has completed dozens of projects, mainly in Bratislava. These include interiors (the Government Lounge at Bratislava Airport, together with Vojtech Vilhan), department stores (OD Ružinov, which no longer exists), banks (the headquarters of ČSOB and VÚB in Bratislava), renovations of interwar and historical architecture, villas, and family houses. He is a member of editorial boards and expert commissions. He regularly publishes in professional and public press. His works are exhibited and published abroad as well. He has been a curator of several exhibitions that presented Slovak architecture abroad.
