It has been sixteen years since Winy Maas founded the now legendary office MVRDV in Rotterdam with his two partners, whose projects and buildings continuously create a stir. Only now have they managed to realize some of their ideas in Rotterdam – specifically, this concerns the renovation of the interior and the roof extension for the hair stylist studio Sjoerd Didden, which was completed on February 28, 2007. An open house was held on the same day. The authors of the building were also present, ready for any discussion. MVRDV used the roof of the existing building as the base for their “superstructure.” The project consists of three small houses with gable roofs and various garden furniture. Everything looks incredibly childish and artificial. The entire extension (including small details like a watering can) is painted in a striking turquoise blue. Two giant cylinders connect the existing building with the roof extension, inside which there are spiral staircases. A report and photos from the mentioned open house were published by the eikongraphia website - here.
