The Shenzhen Stock Exchange announced on December 22 that the Rotterdam office of OMA won the competition for its new headquarters, which will be located in the financial district next to the administrative and cultural center of this southern Chinese city. Covering an area of 259,000 m², the 250-meter-high building will include not only office and commercial spaces but also a Clearing-House and Securities Information Company.
The slender tall tower is set on a broader base. A boldly cantilevered terrace separates them. The covered space beneath serves as a square for organizing festivals. At the same time, information from the finance sector is projected on a giant digital screen placed on the cantilevered terrace. “They broadcast stock market activities throughout the city,” says Koolhaas. “The essence of every exchange is speculation: It relies on capital, not gravity. Therefore, symbolism is more important than the spatial program. The new building is intended to shelter a wide virtual exchange that is more visualized than merely materialized.” The Shenzhen exchange is one of only two exchanges in all of China. Its specialization is in High-Tech company stocks. Link>
