New York

New York - The city of Zlín will be presented in New York in the coming weeks. The presentation, which aims to showcase Zlín's traditions and contemporary business, fashion, architecture, and design to the local audience on several occasions, kicks off on Thursday with the opening of an exhibition featuring design trends from students of Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín. The main event will then take place a week later at the prestigious Museum of Art and Design.
"The idea to invite Zlín to New York originated after The New York Times described Zlín as 'America in Central Europe' about a year ago," said Monika Koblerová, director of the Czech Center in New York, which is organizing the ZLíNY project in cooperation with the Zlín municipality and university. According to her, this is a pilot project and the most extensive presentation of a single region of the Czech Republic in New York to date.
"We wanted to present the uniqueness of Zlín that combines everything New York loves - unique architecture and design, an interesting story, significant personalities, but also great potential," she stated. The organizers intentionally scheduled the start during New York's Design Week to reach the professional public, she added.
The greatest attention will be focused on the gala evening on Thursday, May 20, featuring a fashion show by designer Šárka Šišková, founder and lead educator of the Fashion Design Studio at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Baťa University.
In the evening segment titled Born in Zlín, guests will be able to learn about the fates of famous natives of Zlín - Canadian entrepreneur Tomáš Baťa, British playwright Tom Stoppard, American businesswoman Ivana Trump, Czech architect Eva Jiřičná, and British journalist John Tusa.
The worlds of fashion and architecture will be connected by an exhibition opened during the gala evening, where photographer Lucie Robinsonová will present her perspectives on the interplay between feminine charm and technically advanced modern architecture of the new Congress and University Center in Zlín, designed by the world-renowned architect Eva Jiřičná. The model for the large-format photographs was Miss World 2006 Taťána Kuchařová.
The presentation of Zlín will also include a seminar on business and entrepreneurial opportunities in the Zlín region as well as a presentation of the region as an attractive tourist destination. There will also be a lecture by Eva Jiřičná on the specific architecture of Zlín - from the unique original construction of the city as an urban, social, and architectural complex to the contemporary Congress and University Center.
In June, an exhibition of historical photographs of Zlín and a screening of the Zlín episode of the TV series Šumná města will be prepared for the Prague Kolektiv gallery in Brooklyn, which specializes in the sale of Czech design furniture from the 1930s.
