Brno - Indians are currently getting acquainted with the pearls of Brno functionalism, including the Tugendhat and Stiassni villas, thanks to a traveling exhibition prepared by Czech experts. At the moment, it has stopped in Chandigarh and will soon move on to an architectural symposium in Hisar, then to Delhi and Ahmedabad, the creators of the exhibition told journalists today.
According to experts, Brno functionalism represents an extraordinary "export item" and an attraction for tourists. "Every day we walk past buildings whose great potential for Brno we do not even fully realize," stated Petr Kroupa, director of the Center for the Restoration of 20th Century Architecture Monuments.
The exhibition, consisting of two dozen panels, maps the most significant Brno buildings and personalities from the years 1918 to 1938. Notable works include buildings by Ernst Wiesner, the Avion hotel by Bohuslav Fuchs, as well as structures by Jiří Kroha, Jan Víšek, and Bedřich Rozehnal.
The organizers of the exhibition did not choose Chandigarh by chance. The unique urban concept of the city divided into geometric sectors with different functions is the work of Le Corbusier, one of the greatest architects of the 20th century. The atmosphere of functionalism is said to breathe from almost every building in Chandigarh, which is why Brno architecture finds a resonance there.
The exhibition Brno - a city with the spirit of Bauhaus has already made stops in Tel Aviv, Prague, and Bratislava before its journey to India, and it could also be seen by Brno residents at the Regiontour fair.
