Ivan Ruller

November marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Brno architect Ivan Ruller (1926–2018). To commemorate this anniversary, the Brno City Museum, in collaboration with the Brno Gallery of Architecture and with support from the Czech Architecture Foundation, has prepared the exhibition Ruller 91+9, dedicated to his life, work and remarkable legacy.
Ivan Ruller is inextricably linked with Brno and the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology, where he studied architecture and later served as a lecturer and dean. He played a significant role in the faculty’s transformation after 1989 and created more than 600 projects of various types throughout his career. His best-known completed works include the Ingstav building on Vídeňská Street, the Rondo arena and the funeral hall in Brno-Židenice.
The exhibition will focus not only on Ruller’s architectural work but also on his close relationship with the visual arts. Collaboration with artists was an important part of his work and was reflected in many of his designs. This interplay between architecture and other artistic disciplines is one of the main themes of the upcoming exhibition.
The exhibition will officially open on 19 November at 6:00 p.m. at the Brno Gallery of Architecture, 18 Starobrněnská Street. The evening will also feature the launch of the publication Forms and the City: Ivan Ruller’s Buildings in Brno.
