Starting Monday, the seventh edition of the international festival of architecture and urbanism, Architecture Week, is on display at the Jiřský Palace in Prague Castle. It will last until October 20. This year, the organizers have also thought of children and prepared a rich program for them.
Part of the festival is also a new nationwide artistic project Playful Architect.

It helps to introduce children from 3rd and 4th grades of elementary schools to historical architecture and the monuments of their city in an entertaining way. The children were tasked with depicting interesting monuments of their choice, with the best being presented in a separate exhibition at the Jiřský Palace. More than 600 children from 20 elementary schools across 20 cities in the Czech Republic participated in this event.

The children whose works are on display can also enjoy a day at Prague Castle. Workshops are also held during their visit. “We try to sow the seed of awareness about architecture in children. They know it exists, and we want to show them that architecture can be good or bad, that it needs to be conceived, and that it’s not work for superhumans, but for them too,” said Ondřej Šefců, the director of the National Heritage Institute for Prague, who conducts the workshops with the children.

Gifts were prepared for the children along with a tour of the exhibition The Story of Prague Castle, led by Czech architect, architectural historian, expert publicist, and university lecturer Zdeněk Lukeš.

In addition, the organizers consider the parents who will visit the Architecture Week exhibition with their children and have prepared a special program for them.

There are series of significant world buildings on display from the LEGO collection, which serve as a bit of inspiration for the children. The children can then try to build their own structures from the blocks, so while the parents explore the Architecture Week exhibition, their children are entertained with building sets and learn something new.

“We would like to establish a new tradition of annual meetings for children at Prague Castle from the Playful Architect project. Additionally, we want to develop this project in an international context, so each year will have its own theme,” revealed the festival director Petr Ivanov.
