In the Monastery Church of St. Antoninus of Padua in Sokolov, a reprise of the traveling exhibition on Prague's functionalism will take place on September 5, 2016, at 17:30.
Reprisal of the exhibition. Purism, constructivism, rationalism, or functionalism are terms that attempt to name various aspects of the remarkable phenomenon that literally swept through the European architectural scene in the 1920s.
One of the main artistic centers where this new understanding of architecture developed was Prague from the very beginning. Functionalism was not only passively accepted here but was practically and theoretically developed. Thanks to the talent and enthusiasm of a whole generation of young architects, Prague became an architectural laboratory, whose significance far exceeded Czechoslovak borders.
Prague, alongside Brno and Zlín, was a center of Czech and European functionalist architecture during the First Republic, as evidenced by the establishment of "Osada Baba" and its unmistakable role in the development of Czech modern and contemporary architecture. Some Prague functionalist realizations are among the gems of world modern architecture.
The sober line of Czech architecture, which has been its most prominent trend in the past two decades, is undoubtedly influenced by the legacy of pre-war functionalism – a legacy that has been resuscitated, modified, and creatively developed many times. Contemporary Prague buildings, which are presented in the second part of the exhibition, can certainly be included in this broad and internally differentiated stream.
The core idea of this exhibition is to present this golden fund from the history of Czech and Prague architecture alongside contemporary production influenced by the functionalist archetype.
Visitors will be able to familiarize themselves with, for example, the most famous modern building in Prague from the interwar period, the Müller Villa by Adolf Loos, the masterpiece of Czech functionalism, the building of the Mánes Union of Fine Arts by Otakar Novotný, the Catholic Church of St. Wenceslas by Josef Gočár, the Villa Colony at Baba, and other significant projects and realizations of Prague functionalism. Contemporary architecture will be represented by, for example, the Euro Palace (DaM), Muzo Center (Stanislav Fiala, D3A), the purist subway station Kolbenova (DUM architekti), and family houses and villas.
The exhibition was prepared by the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery with the professional and curatorial assistance of leading Czech theorists of architecture Zdeněk Lukeš and Petr Kratochvíl; the reprise in Haarlem was realized in collaboration with the Czech Centre in the Netherlands.
