Invitation to the exhibition "ARC...+5 workshop"
Five years have passed since the start of architecture studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at VUT in Brno. The implementation was entrusted to the Institute of Architecture, coded as ARC. In the academic year 2005/2006, the bachelor's program "Architecture of Civil Buildings" was opened, followed by a master's program "Architecture and Urban Development" four years later. The original intention to expand the range of study opportunities in this highly sought-after field is being fulfilled step by step. Today, 277 future architects are studying at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, whose professional profiles differ to some extent from the qualifications provided by other architecture schools.
The structured study at FAST VUT is designed as a four-year bachelor's and two-year master's program with an embedded professional practice outside the academic environment.
The bachelor's program "Architecture of Civil Buildings" was developed according to the anticipated position of graduates in the job market, which is reflected in the composition of subjects. The main teaching tool is studio work (approximately 27% of the total volume). A specific feature of the program is the emphasis on new subjects related to the quality realization of buildings. The qualification readiness of the graduate is assessed by a final bachelor's thesis, which consists of a transfer of the conceptual architectural study previously designed by the student, developed to the level of detailed construction technical documentation. This work demonstrates the graduate's ability to apply their knowledge in mutual architectural and technical contexts and confirms their full applicability in professional practice.
The professional practice included at the end of the study is a significant part of the complete bachelor's education. It allows graduates to gain the most basic knowledge about real economic, procedural, and legal relationships related to their profession, including awareness of responsibilities towards the profession, employers, and clients.
The admission requirements for study include talent tests, mathematics and descriptive geometry tests, and a professional discussion.
A significant contribution to the offered options for studying architecture is the follow-up master's program "Architecture and Urban Development." It broadens the field of architecture studies with previously unoffered disciplines, especially from social sciences and economic fields. Therefore, some disciplines are also taught by teachers from the Faculty of Economics and Administration of Masaryk University.
The profile of the graduate is determined by one of the focuses of the study program, which the applicant chooses at the beginning of their studies. It can be Architecture, Architecture Management, or Spatial Planning.
A graduate of the Architecture focus is capable of processing architectural designs for operationally demanding buildings or groups of buildings and at the same time ensuring supervision of their quality realization. They are prepared for authorization at the Czech Chamber of Architects and subsequently for leading an architectural office.
A graduate of the Architecture Management focus is prepared to represent the client in all phases of pre-project, project, and implementation activities related to the creation of construction works. Their employment is primarily in contracting firms that ensure the realization of buildings from the initial concept to occupancy permits.
A graduate of the Spatial Planning focus is primarily prepared for work in public administration. They are capable of managing the development of urban units from both technical-economic and environmental and aesthetic perspectives. They are familiar with working with European and domestic public funds. Their employment is mainly in local and regional spatial development departments.
Especially the focuses of Architecture Management and Spatial Planning represent qualifications that no Czech architecture school offers yet. This is a distinctive contribution of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at VUT Brno in national and European contexts.
