Bratislava – The selection of the exhibition project and the realization of the exhibition at the 17th International Architecture Biennale in Venice 2020 in the pavilion of the Czech and Slovak Republics has been halted by an unexpected development regarding the technical condition of the pavilion in Giardini di Castello in Venice.
At the beginning of summer this year, the Slovak National Gallery announced a competition for the selection of an exhibition project and the subsequent realization of the exhibition at the International Architecture Biennale in Venice 2020. However, circumstances changed during the summer when a severe storm significantly damaged the glass skylight of the pavilion during the ongoing exhibition. After a period of closure, the pavilion manager from the National Gallery Prague addressed the reopening of the exhibition with a temporary cover and began preparations for the remediation of the damage.
"The original idea counted on the repair of the structure from the end of this year's Biennale until the opening of the exhibition next year. However, the report from the invited structural engineer formulates more serious problems with the roof structure itself and anticipates more significant construction interventions. A meeting is planned between representatives of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, NG Prague, and SNG, where the further course of action in resolving the situation will be discussed", says the project coordinator for SNG, Monika Krčmárik. The SNG will inform the public about further updates after the meeting of representatives from both ministries and institutions.
The Venice Biennale has been one of the most prestigious cultural events in the world for more than 120 years. The history of the Biennale di Venezia dates back to 1895 when the first international art exhibition took place. Since its inception, the biennale has presented visual arts every two years, to which later were added film showcases (Venice Film Festival), architecture (Architecture Biennale), theater, music, and contemporary dance. The first international architecture exhibition was held in 1980.
