Ostrava - The cultural monument Důl Michal in Ostrava-Michálkovice can now be visited by people at unusual times. Its staff has launched commented night tours. Visitors equipped with original mining lamps and helmets can view the exhibitions every Friday starting at 9 PM. Karolína Grymová from Důl Michal told ČTK. The first night tour today attracted about ten people. “We conduct the night tour for a maximum of 20 interested individuals, so the groups are limited,” Grymová told ČTK. Mine tours will continue even after the holidays, but starting in September, interested parties must make a reservation in advance. “In these cases, the tour will take place if at least five visitors are interested,” she explained, adding that the night tours will last nearly two hours. Visitors to Důl Michal can see, for example, the chain locker rooms, the guild hall, and the engine room. They will follow the same route as the miners did during their daily commute to work. Thus, they will walk through an area that faithfully captures the technical condition from the years 1912 to 1915. According to the design by architect František Fiala, the mine was completely rebuilt at that time into a modern, fully electrified operation, which represents a collection of electrical hoisting machines and compressors from the early days of electrification. The Heritage Institute of Ostrava wanted to preserve the entire area of the mine in its original form - as if the people who worked there had just left and everything was kept in its place. The atmosphere of the so-called last day is enhanced by the worn handrails, tattered stairs, and peeling paint.
