Opava - The beauty of nature and the diversity of Silesian architecture will be showcased in two major exhibitions planned for this year by the Silesian Regional Museum in Opava. This was communicated to ČTK by the museum spokesperson Romana Talačová. The Hrabyně Memorial of World War II will again this year present the war from the perspective of women, while visitors to the Arboretum Nový Dvůr will see life in an Indian village.
Among the most significant upcoming events, according to Talačová, are exhibitions dedicated to the natural and architectural beauties of Silesia. Both will be located in the Historical Exhibition Building of the museum. The first exhibition titled Silesia Exhibition will open in May. "It is an ambitious project through which we would like to introduce the nature and culture of one of the historical regions of the Czech state," the spokesperson stated.
Another exhibition dedicated to Silesia will then focus on the architectural monuments of the region from September to February 2013. "Silesia is not just about smelters, mines, and factories. It is a landscape full of magnificent churches, castles, villas, and many other interesting buildings," she said. The exhibition will offer an unconventional view of the landscape of Silesia and its transformations throughout history. The exhibition will feature both photographs and items from preserved monuments as well as those that have been irretrievably destroyed.
Additionally, this year two extensive renovations of buildings under the management of the museum will be completed. The renovation of the Historical Exhibition Building began in the autumn of 2010, and the total costs amounted to 110 million crowns. The Central Library of the Silesian Regional Museum is also expected to reopen in the autumn.
The Silesian Regional Museum is the oldest public museum in the territory of today's Czech Republic, with a history that dates back to 1814. It holds a collection of 2.4 million items, making it the largest museum in the Czech Republic in this regard.
