The series Disconnected. Connected! is one of the curatorial projects of CCEA and follows its effort to promote the young architectural generation, connecting architecture with other artistic fields, advocating for an attractive and comprehensible form of architectural presentation, and finding ways to popularize architecture through other artistic disciplines and their specific possibilities. Curators from CCEA always select from the most current architectural diploma works that have been defended at all Czech universities with an architectural focus (FA CTU Prague, FA BUT Brno, FA Technical University in Liberec, AVU in Prague, and UMPRUM in Prague). Thus, the best diploma works, resulting from various architectural schools, confront each other in one place. This offers a unique opportunity to compare whether there is a transparent difference between, for example, a graduate from a technical school and an art school, or not?

This year's fourth edition of the cycle (this year subtitled Architecture and Comics) builds on a rich history: Architecture and Animation (2004), Architecture and Advertising Photography (2005), Architecture and DJ-ing (2006).

To collaborate on the selection and outreach to comic creators, we invited curators Tomáš Prokůpek and Tomáš Hibi Matějíček.

Disconnected. Connected! 2007
Architecture and Comics

..."Architecture enters the world of comics significantly, whether directly or indirectly. It is very interesting how many prominent comic creators have studied architecture - worth mentioning are the Italian Milo Manara, the French Jacques de Loustal, the Spaniard Miguelanxo Prado, the Belgian Stijn Gisquiere, the Polish émigré Zbygniew Kasprzak, Croatian classic Žarko Beker, or the most successful contemporary Romanian cartoonist Sandu Florea. And rather as curiosity, I will remind that Lucie Lomová, the first Czech who published an author comic album in France, is the great-granddaughter of Jan Kotěra, and both her mother and sister studied architecture.
In comics themselves, architecture is present at every step, whether it is about monstrous neo-Gothic skyscrapers from Batman's Gotham, Gaudí-esque-Freudian creations of Saudek's metropolises of the future, or realistically captured ordinary buildings in everyday stories. However, there are also cycles and albums in which architecture plays a truly fundamental or even the main role. The most significant series of this type is Les Cités Obscures (Obscure Cities). Behind its creation are two Belgians, screenwriter Benoît Peeters and artist Francois Schuiten, who gradually present readers with individual metropolises of their imaginary world, where Verne-like art deco keeps pace with hypertrophied functionalism. An important example is the album Le Triangle Rouge (The Red Triangle), which German creator Andreas made as a tribute to the invention of Frank Lloyd Wright."
Quoted from the introduction of the exhibition catalog by Tomáš Prokůpek.

The selection criterion from approximately a hundred works is the conceptual idea, the quality of execution, and last but not least, the theme of the diploma work. Each year, the curators try to select a representative sample that captures not only the individuality of the author but also the overall atmosphere of the school.

In the exhibition's conception, there is always a significant emphasis on the presentation of models (whether physical or animated); portfolios of diploma works, as presented during the defense (with technical reports, drawings, and visualizations), are always available for viewing.

The task of comic authors is to respond with their medium to the selected architectural project and create a standalone work that will be part of the exhibition and thus of the discourse on the youngest architectural scene and the current comic scene.
We again expect from the project both a creative communication link between graduates of architectural schools and comic authors, and an increased opportunity to popularize the field of architecture among the wider public through another artistic field.

Honza Bažant (*1979)
(response to Jan Skoupý's project)
He studied scenic technology at a secondary school for applied arts and scenography for alternative and puppet theater at DAMU in Prague. He has been engaged in comics and their forms for about 10 years. His other work, such as theater, is also heavily influenced by it, as he stubbornly tries to transfer two-dimensional comics into space. Currently, he makes a living from scenography and similar work because comics, as such, cannot sustain him in the Czech Republic due to the small market. He therefore tries to assert himself within the European independent scene, which fortunately is prospering quite well. What fascinates him about comics is the enormous creative freedom that arises from relatively low production costs, freeing the author's mutated imagination from unforeseen superpowers.

Petr Včelka (*1983)
(response to Jiří Vokřál's project)
A fourth-year student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, where for the third year he is trying to find a connection between free graphics, painting, graphic design, and comics at the Department of Free Graphics and Illustration under Prof. Kállay. He lives off his parents' money, but in various ways, he also supports himself with his skills. Comics is his natural environment where he can apply and reflect his mental and technical potential. In his creative approach, he is an eternal beginner.
