Thought City - Urban Strategies Between Control and Laissez-Faire

The goal of the project Think City is to open an interdisciplinary discussion on flexible urban planning. We are looking for common starting points and themes to understand the contemporary city and urbanism. The project consists of two parts: an exhibition and a complementary program. The exhibition will showcase current urban strategies of ten world cities. The projection on seven screens will elaborate on five main themes: options for urban planning, methods of public engagement, planning with respect to the context of place, scale, and time. These themes will be illustrated with examples from Curitiba, Copenhagen, Paris, Bilbao, Barcelona, Tehran, Zurich, Lagos, and São Paulo. The main themes of the exhibition are connected to the forthcoming book Think City: between control and laissez-faire.

The exhibition project focuses on researching current approaches to urban planning that fluctuate between efforts for rigorous control of city development and spontaneous, unmanaged laissez-faire. The transformations of ten world cities are viewed through the prism of five main themes concerning the possibility of managing the city, the ways of its organization, scale, forms of intervention, and planning from a temporal perspective.
