Launch of the monograph "Petr Kvíčala, July 1984 to February 28, 2006"

From May to the end of June, the Brno Gallery of Architecture hosts an exhibition of painter Petr Kvíčala titled The Surface of Architecture. It is accompanied by an artistic monograph, the launch of which will take place as the closing event of the exhibition in the ceremonial hall of the Reduta Theater in Zelny trh, where the author realized his largest painting intervention in architecture, considered as the most successful connection of contemporary painting and architecture in our country. The lavish monograph contains not only texts by leading Czech theorists of visual art but also texts in which Petr Kvíčala comments on the creation of his works; it was published by Arbor vitae, which has been awarded as the Publisher of the Year.
The book will be presented by visual theorist Tomáš Pospiszyl and graphic designer Petr Babák, chairman of the International Graphic Biennale in Brno.
During the evening, there will be a presentation of a collection of garments by designer Denisa Nová, with whom Kvíčala collaborated on some models. The evening will be accompanied by a performance on drums by Pavel Fajt.

Visitors will receive a signed copy of a limited series of posters that Kvíčala prepared alongside Wanieck Gallery for this occasion. Admission is free.

Petr Kvíčala focuses on non-figurative geometric art in his work, particularly ornamentation and line, with a distinctly expressive use of color being important in his pieces.
The significance of his work transcends Czech borders, as since 1995, when he was approached by Czech architect living in Lausanne Ivan Koleček, he has worked on several architectural projects in Switzerland and subsequently in the Czech Republic. In 2003, he was then approached by the prominent global Spanish architect Josep Lluís Mateo, for whom he enhanced the interior of his building Deutsche Bundes Bank in Chemnitz with painting on the ceiling (approximately 150 m2).
Kvíčala has been engaged in architectural work for several years; for the Brno environment, his most important projects include the adaptation of the ceremonial hall, café, and terrazzo flooring in the Reduta Theater in Zelny trh or the facade and internal interpretation of Milosrdní Bratři Hospital in Brno. Like few artists, he inventively and conscientiously works with the atmosphere of space; his paintings, mosaics, or murals precisely enhance the genius loci of the interior.
Since 1994, Kvíčala has been active at the Brno Faculty of Fine Arts at VUT, where he currently leads a painting studio and mentors the upcoming generation of authors.
