Prague - The Klub Za starou Prahu is celebrating 125 years of its existence with an exhibition at its headquarters in the Judith Tower on the Malá Strana side of the Charles Bridge. It started last week and the public can see it every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoon until November 23. The non-political civic association that the club is today strives to protect not only the architectural essence of historic Prague but also aims for the highest quality contemporary architecture to be introduced into it. The exhibition thus showcases the battles and causes in which the association has engaged during a century and a quarter of activity, reported the club's director Lukáš Veverka and its chairman Richard Biegel to ČTK in a press release.

The exhibition addresses significant and radical changes since 1900 that have affected and still affect Prague. The club was founded in January by personalities of the Prague intelligentsia, including architects, artists, theorists, and historians, in response to the ongoing sanitation of the Jewish Quarter.

"In 2025, there is a valid heritage law and urban plan, the center is a protected UNESCO site, and its value is undeniable. Nevertheless, some city problems are still similar to those in 1900 after 125 years," stated Veverka in a press release.

The main theme of the exhibition is thus the period from 1990 to 2025. It maps precedent-setting decisions, the controversial situation in the historic center, and its reasons. "A critical thread runs through the individual projects, highlighting the criticism of the heritage care department of the municipal office, which has long disregarded the expert opinions of the National Heritage Institute," is stated in the press release.

However, the exhibition's theme is not just criticism. It also showcases contemporary architecture that, according to the club, has appropriately complemented the historic environment, not only in Prague. The club has been awarding such realizations with its prize for more than 20 years, which is given to architects. This underscores its long-term stance that the protection of the city can be combined with contemporary architecture. It shows that even long-standing pressing heritage issues in the center of Prague can ultimately have meaningful solutions, added Biegel and Veverka.
