Artistic Living in the Space of Loos's Architectural Interiors in Pilsen

The exhibition focuses on the presentation of current artworks by Czech visual artists from the younger and middle generations responding to the unique residential interior realizations of Adolf Loos in Pilsen. The authors invited to participate in the exhibition represent both the local Pilsen art scene and a broader circle of Czech visual arts, with many of them having at least briefly worked in Pilsen as educators or students at the local art university – the Faculty of Design and Art Ladislav Sutnar of the West Bohemian University. Each artist in their works freely or entirely interconnectedly responds to the complex of questions associated with Loos's residential realizations and their broader aesthetic, historical, or social context.

The exhibition highlights a unique historical and cultural phenomenon – eight residential interiors designed by Adolf Loos for Pilsen clients. The exhibition's concept is focused on the presentation of artistic projects by thirteen younger and middle-generation artists that react either directly or indirectly to Loos's residential realizations, their fate, the fates of their clients, or broader historical, political, cultural, or social contexts connected with the emergence and often the demise of these realizations. Each artist, in their work, draws on the study and exploration of specific Loos interiors and responds to current questions related to the development of the interpretation of historical contexts and their analysis in light of dynamic movements present in today's societal situation. The artists employ different expressive strategies when thematizing the observed material, but they purposefully prefer progressive approaches – primarily site-specific analyses, working with archives, pseudo-documentarism, participatory or educational methods, etc. The goal of the exhibition project is to connect and convincingly demonstrate the integrity of Pilsen's cultural milieu in relation to the historical socio-cultural development and the current artistic situation in this city. The exhibition deepens the potential of the specific location and opens up space for self-identification for the participants of the project as well as the wider audience. On a basic historical framework and its intense artistic updates, it offers a wide array of interpretative frameworks particularly following the transformation of historical experiences into the uncertain space of our everyday lives.
