The Jaroslav Fragner Gallery, in collaboration with the ROM Gallery in Oslo, has prepared an exhibition of the leading Norwegian architecture photographer Jiří Havran. An extensive Czech-English publication documenting the work of the author, who emigrated to Norway in 1974, is also published in conjunction with the exhibition. In Oslo, he co-founded several cultural institutions (the publishing house ARFO, the ROM gallery) and collaborates with leading architectural firms.
The collaboration with Jiří Havran began at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery during the preparations for the exhibition about the architect Martin Roubík, who also emigrated and worked in Oslo (GJF, 2009). Therefore, the exhibition in Prague will also feature photographs created specifically for this exhibition. Jiří Havran regularly returns to the Czech Republic and photographs here as well. The exhibition will present several photographic series, particularly from the last two years - for example, National Tourist Routes - places of special attention such as rest areas, viewpoints, and points of interest along selected routes in Norway, or Suldal kraft / Norwegian Brutalist Architecture. This series is supplemented with photographs of Czech Brutalist architecture of the 1960s and 70s or the series Red Spaces (the church in Øvre Årdal built from red bricks in the 1960s).
The Czech audience got a partial introduction to his work last summer at GJF. Jiří Havran was one of the selected photographers for the outstanding traveling exhibition of recent achievements by Norwegian studios Contemporary Norwegian Architecture #7, created by the National Museum of Art and Architecture, which received an unprecedented response from the audience.
The exhibition is prepared in collaboration with the ROM Gallery / KUNST + ARKITEKTUR and its director Henrik der Minassian, and it is under the patronage of the Norwegian ambassador, H.E. Jens Eikaas. The exhibition features contributions from renowned Norwegian art historian Per Bj. Boym, who also wrote the foreword to the catalog.
Those interested in Norwegian architecture will surely appreciate a lecture with a presentation, in which Jiří Havran will present the history of architecture in Norway from the Middle Ages to the present with his photographs. The images of buildings were created for a number of publications by the ARFO publishing house, which focuses on architecture, and which this photographer played a significant role in founding. The lecture History of Norwegian Architecture in Photography will take place on the eve of the exhibition opening on Wednesday, October 24, at 7:00 PM at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery.
