The exhibition produced by the Museum of Finnish Architecture will showcase contemporary residential architecture in Helsinki and its immediate surroundings. Its theme is present-day Helsinki and the architectural and sociological changes occurring here. It focuses on both individual housing and larger urban studies.
The urbanism of the Helsinki region is fragmented. Services, industry, and department stores are leaving the city center and moving closer to the main city thoroughfares. The population is dispersed. The result is an unecological, unpleasant, and financially demanding urban structure with a growing transportation network. Helsinki is the only urban agglomeration in Finland, and its prosperity impacts the future of the entire country. The problems arising from the city’s dispersion require government intervention and increase collaboration between municipalities.

The issue can be approached from different angles. The exhibition City Home shows that interesting results are generated both by exploring the elasticity of urban structure and by adapting existing buildings and utilizing existing commercial and social networks, public transport, and infrastructure.

Part of the exhibition was presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2006
