Brtnice (Jihlava Region) - The Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna and the Moravian Gallery in Brno have prepared an extraordinary experience for visitors to Brtnice in the Jihlava region. In the local museum, they can explore selected furniture, glass objects, drawings, photographs, and texts by two influential architects of Viennese modernity, Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos. The exhibition Ornament and Tradition, which began today with about 400 guests in attendance, follows the exciting discussion between the two artists.
"The question of whether and how shapes may be adorned characterized the aesthetic discourse in Vienna around 1900. Regarding the value of ornament, Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos became vehement adversaries during their development. In this conflict, they defended controversial positions: Josef Hoffmann as a co-founder of the Secession and Wiener Werkstätte, and Adolf Loos as an opponent of any ornamentation on utilitarian objects and houses, as well as the author of the polemic Ornament and Crime," said the curator of the exhibition, Martina Straková, to ČTK. Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) and Adolf Loos (1870-1933) first met during their school years. Both studied at a gymnasium in Jihlava and later attended the architectural department of the Higher State Industrial School in Brno (1888/89). After graduation, their paths diverged. As promising architects, they later met again in Vienna. Hoffmann was born in Brtnice in the Jihlava region. Through the efforts of several enthusiasts led by former librarian Eliška Nosálová, a museum was established in his family home in the square. Later, a library and objects in the garden for summer events were also created. Since last year, the museum in Brtnice has been operated as a joint workplace of the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts (MAK). MAK's activities in Hoffmann's house date back to 1992. With a series of exhibitions on themes related to Josef Hoffmann, MAK now reveals various aspects of the life and work of this significant architect. The exhibition Josef Hoffmann - Adolf Loos will run until October 28. It is funded by resources from the EU Interreg program. On Friday, June 22, the project continues with Museum Night, which will feature night tours, an arts workshop, a fashion show, concerts, and a night expedition to the grave of Hoffmann's parents. Visitors can also expect special discounts on publications.
