Plzeň – Plzeň and the municipal company Vodárna have begun preparing for the reconstruction and transformation of the first part of Masaryk Street for 115 million crowns. It will become a boulevard that is intended to be safer and more welcoming for people. This is the main street of the Doubravka district and one of the most well-known streets in Plzeň. The first phase from Rokycanská to Těšínská Street will fully start in June. Old water and sewage pipes, lights, and traction will be replaced; traffic safety will be enhanced, and public space will be improved. The construction has been discussed for 15 years, and the original building permit was issued ten years ago, said the mayor of the Plzeň 4 district, Tomáš Soukup (ANO).
"The revitalization itself is planned to start after the completion of the nearby Rolnické Square," said Deputy Mayor Aleš Tolar (STAN). A new sewage system and water supply have been under construction at Rolnické Square for almost a year, and the entire road there is closed. Public transport is expected to return by the end of April, and all traffic a month later.
"Right after that, we will start with 'Masaryčka.' It will be completed in two construction seasons," added Soukup. The first phase will be from Rokycanská to Těšínská Street, right to the post office. This will be immediately followed by the section from the post office to Slezská Street at the Centrum department store, in front of which a new space with a market will be created. The removal of unsuitable greenery in the street has already begun and will be completed by the end of March.
"We will inform in advance about the exact date of the start of reconstruction and traffic restrictions," said Barbora Hájková from the city's press department. The selection process for the contractor is currently underway, with the project price being 115 million crowns excluding VAT. During construction, all traffic will be excluded on the section from Rokycanská to Těšínská Street.
"It will be a complete renewal of the engineering networks. Then, the roadway, including bays, sidewalks, and bike paths, will be repaired," said Tolar.
Doubravka does not have a main square, and Masarykova Street takes on this role. "From the beginning, we wanted to know the opinions of the locals, which is why we collected their suggestions and incorporated many of them into the project. The goal is for the street to be safer, clearer, and more pleasant for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. We also plan to modify the space around the Centrum and to cultivate the background of the market," said Soukup.
According to him, the project for Smrková Street behind the Centrum is already completed. "The rest still needs to be designed. We have a study, and we are preparing it," noted Soukup. At the end of Masaryk Street, at the trolleybus and bus terminus, the district wants to start constructing a transport hub with a new park in 2027. The Plzeň 4 district is continuously growing, with over 25,000 permanently registered residents; however, it is estimated that up to 40,000 people live there.
