Prague – The restoration of the mechanized brickworks in Boubín in the Šumava region, the interior of the House of Culture in Ostrov in the Karlovy Vary region, and František Grossmann’s villa in Ostrava were among the winners of this year’s Patrimonium pro futuro (Heritage for the Future) awards. The National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) presented the so-called heritage Oscars to nine projects in eight categories. Historic gardens expert Jiří Olšan was named Heritage Conservation Personality of the Year. Czech Television’s programme Z metropole (From the Metropolis) won both the public choice award and the award for raising public awareness. The organizers presented the awards in Prague this evening.

According to NPÚ Director-General Naděžda Goryczková, caring for cultural heritage is not the responsibility of a single institution or profession. "Behind it are experts, owners, municipalities, associations, conservators, archaeologists and people willing to devote their time, energy and often considerable resources to saving historic sites. It is their work that deserves attention and public recognition," Goryczková said.

According to the heritage institute, the mechanized brickworks in Boubín represents an exceptional example of saving industrial heritage. The private investor did not merely repair the buildings, but also decided to restore the brickworks’ character, including its traditional working methods and technology.

In the restoration category, the award went to the conservators who restored the ceiling painting The Olympian Gods and the Fall of the Titans – The Apotheosis of Emperor Charles VI as Victor over the Turks in the ballroom of Prague’s Colloredo-Mansfeld Palace. Prague City Gallery is overseeing the restoration of the Baroque landmark.

The discovery of an early Gothic burgher’s house dating from the first half of the 13th century on Veselá Street in Brno was named Discovery of the Year. The find is exceptional for its age, extent and state of preservation.

The makers of the television magazine programme Z metropole took home both the public choice award, Heritage Says Thank You, and the award for raising public awareness. The audiovisual chronicle of Prague, which has been broadcast for 20 years, received the most votes in the online poll. The town of Kraslice in the Sokolov region and a local association won in the heritage rescue category. They were instrumental in saving an 18th-century half-timbered house and giving it a new lease of life.

The market town of Chudenice in the Klatovy region received the award for exemplary heritage management for its approach to the Old Chateau. The chateau was not only preserved but also transformed into a community centre for the region.

Two NPÚ Director-General’s Awards, which span all categories, were presented this year. The first went to the restoration of the interior of the House of Culture in Ostrov as an example of a sensitive approach to 1950s architecture. The second went to the restoration of František Grossmann’s villa in Ostrava, with its emphasis on preserving authentic features, high-quality craftsmanship and respect for the original architecture of one of Ostrava’s most valuable villas.

Jiří Olšan, known as the castle gardener from Český Krumlov, received the title of Heritage Conservation Personality of the Year. The NPÚ recognized the several decades he devoted to restoring and managing historic gardens and training generations of specialists.

The Patrimonium pro futuro award, organized by the NPÚ as a state-funded organization under the Ministry of Culture, recognizes positive and successful achievements in heritage conservation completed in the previous year. It has been presented since 2014.
