Heike Hanada from the Weimar studio Laboratory of Art and Architecture won an international competition for a new library in Stockholm. The project by this architect, who alternates living between Weimar, Berlin, and Tokyo, is titled “Delphinium” and consists of a clear nine-story block and a low single-story podium. The new building will be constructed in close proximity to the city library from 1928 by Erik Gunnar Asplund. The jury praised the winning project for “creating a worthy framework for Asplund's library and providing a clear background for classic views from Odengatan street. Thanks to the respectful distance, the two different buildings are given the opportunity for coexistence. The low podium with a circular inner garden serves as an entrance building with easy visual orientation and creates a transition and connection between the two buildings. The restoration and connection to the existing hill with a garden area will create a new publicly accessible landscape of extraordinary quality in the urban space.” According to the jury, the multi-story block along Gyldéngatan reflects the hill with its semi-transparent facade and emphasizes its profile in the city's landscape. The “Delphinium” project best fulfills the vision of a clear, open, and communicative library. The design also best fills the cultural and historical gap in the image of the city.
