Zlín - The Building of the Year 2012 in the Zlín Region is also the scientific and technical park of the University of Zlín, focused on information and communication technology, which triumphed in the category of industrial and agricultural buildings. Today, the chairwoman of the jury and the chief architect of Zlín, Dagmar Nová, announced the results of the eleventh year of the competition in all seven categories to journalists. This year, 51 buildings were entered into the competition, which is the same as last year.
"We were pleasantly surprised by the unwavering interest, despite the ongoing crisis in construction. The number of applications exceeded our expectations, there was a lot to choose from. I can say that the quality of buildings is rising year by year," said Nová. Although many proposals thrilled the jury members, the main award Grand Prix Pavla Nováka, named after the late chief architect of the city of Zlín, who was present at the founding of the competition, was not awarded this year, just like last year.
"It is typically awarded exceptionally to a building that exceeds the region's boundaries in content and innovative solutions. We are very cautious with this award," said Nová. In previous years, this award has honored the reconstruction of the Baťa skyscraper, now the seat of the regional office, or the project of the Business and Innovation Center Zlín in the former Baťa factory area.

In the category of civic amenities, the main award was won this year by the reconstruction and extension of the Hotel Pohoda in Pozlovice in the Zlín area, while among family houses, a functionalist house in Zlín na Podhoří triumphed. Among transport, engineering, and ecological buildings, the jury was most impressed by the reconstruction and increase in capacity of the main intersection in Uherské Hradiště.
From the development projects of cities and municipalities, the jury was most attracted by the regeneration of the square in Brumov-Bylnice in the Zlín area. Buildings outside the Zlín Region, designed or constructed by architects and builders from the region, were also evaluated. The jury awarded a special prize to the Škoda Auto Museum building in Mladá Boleslav. In the category of residential houses, the jury did not issue a main prize. Additionally, 15 builders or architects from all categories received honorable mentions.
A special Prize from the Governor of the Zlín Region was also awarded, which went to the construction of the Pneu Vraník facility in Slušovice in the Zlín area, as well as the journalists' award, which was won by the construction of the Živá voda complex in Modrá in the Uherskohradiště area. For the seventh year in a row, a student section was held as part of the competition, with the jury evaluating 18 projects. The first place for the proposal to develop the locality with villas and apartment buildings was awarded to Monika Bartošová from the Secondary School of Engineering Zlín.
