The VELUX company has announced another annual competition, the International VELUX Award 2008, which is intended not only for students but also for their educators. The competition is open to creative ideas and proposals regarding the role of daylight in architecture, not just as a design element or external factor, but also as the most discussed topic of the present day. The competition is organized in collaboration with the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE). Submitted projects must be approved by students' academic consultants before submission. Winning projects will be awarded to students along with their educators as a winning team. Registration for competitors is open until March 8, 2008, and the deadline for project submission is May 8, 2008. The winners will be selected by an international jury composed of recognized architects. The award ceremony will take place in November 2008. The winners will receive a total reward of 30,000 EUR. "We strive for an impartial dialogue about the light of tomorrow, in which experimental approaches and free thinking would be applied. In 2006, a total of 557 projects from 53 countries were accepted into the competition – which is double the amount compared to 2004. The fact that such a large number of students chose to participate and that the jury recognized 20 winners from 12 different countries highlights the global significance of the discussion about daylight in architecture," says Jana Mašatová, project coordinator from VELUX in the Czech Republic. The International VELUX Award 2008 does not have specific categories or requirements for the use of specific materials or VELUX products. Projects can relate to architectural design as well as debate the meaning of daylight in the context of urban life or express much more abstract concepts. Projects can focus, for example, on aesthetics, functionality, sustainability, or the interaction between buildings and the environment. The International VELUX Award takes place every two years.
