The best buildings in South Moravia are Freedom Square and the airport

Brno - The best buildings in South Moravia for the year 2006 are the airport in Tuřany, the reconstruction of Freedom Square, and the headquarters of the Faculty of Information Technology at VUT, along with the golf course in Jinačovice. The results were announced by the organizers of the competition at the Building Fair in Brno. The title of Building of South Moravia 2006 was awarded to a total of seven out of 30 nominees in six categories. The first places remain in Brno.
    Last year, 39 billion CZK was spent on construction in the region, of which 29.5 billion was directly in Brno. A seven-member expert jury selected projects from categories including civic amenities, residential buildings, industrial and technological facilities, transport and water management constructions, ecological projects, and renovations.
    The biggest competition for the title was among the reconstructions. A total of 11 were submitted, such as the administrative center Vienna Point and the swimming pool in Blansko. Eventually, the jury awarded two first places, namely Freedom Square, whose new design was criticized by parts of the public and experts, and the headquarters of the computer scientists from the Czech Technical University. The reconstructions of the Supreme Administrative Court's headquarters and the athletics stadium in Vyškov ended up behind them.
    The airport construction in Brno-Tuřany, favored by experts, also won. "This is a building that has brought a new breeze," said Vítězslav Nový from the Faculty of Architecture at VUT to ČTK earlier. On the contrary, according to him, the chances of Freedom Square are debatable. Its new design was condemned by parts of the public and experts.
