Tasmania, an island with wild nature and a symbolic gateway to Antarctica, is announcing the largest architectural-urban competition currently taking place in the Southern Hemisphere. The task is to design a new waterfront for Tasmania's capital city, Hobart, the second oldest city in Australia.
The location related to the competition was the place where convicts landed in the 19th century when Tasmania was a British colony.
The jury for the competition will include several Australian architects along with Carme Pinós and Wiel Arets, who have experience with similar projects. One to three best projects and the best student project will share a total of €95,000 (for the student project, €6,000 is reserved from this sum).
Visionary designs are expected that primarily address the connection between the city center and the waterfront, which is historically valuable to Tasmania.
Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon anticipates interest from leading world architects in the competition, which could bring about breakthrough projects similar to the design for the Sydney Opera House.
Registration for the competition is possible until November 3, 2006, and the competition deadline is December 1, 2006.
