Brno - The square in the historic center of Brno should henceforth be developed only according to the visions of architects. This week, the councilors decided to have an ideational study prepared for the renovation of the Roman Square. Although it is not one of the main city spaces, it is located in the heart of Brno and has value according to the councilors. The city will announce a public architectural competition for the square's renovation, said Martin Ander (SZ), the mayor's assistant, to ČTK. According to Ander, the competition will be announced in accordance with the rules of the chamber of architects. The costs will amount to 900,000 crowns. "This place definitely deserves this way of selecting the winning variant for the reconstruction. It has its own charm, its genius loci, and it is one of the last squares in the center that has not been reconstructed," described the assistant. The residents of Brno refer to the enclosed space between Františkánská and Josefská streets as Roman Square. The name originated in the 18th century and although in 1867 the authorities designated the space as Františkánská street, the name Roman Square is still used today. Market traders used to reside in the square. "There are old Baroque houses in poor condition, and there is also a fountain with a water feature that is completely destroyed and non-functional," described Deputy Daniel Rychnovský (KDU-ČSL). According to him, architects need to answer the question of how to develop the space - that is, what kind of paving to use, what shape to give the fountain, and how far the space will extend, as it connects to a courtyard. "If it were done amateurishly and lacked grace, the touch of an architect and urban planner, it could be damaged," said Rychnovský. The city will announce the architectural competition in the coming months. According to Rychnovský, the renovation could directly build on the results and the elaborated project.
