Biography
Hermann Billing was a German historicist and Art Nouveau architect and builder. He attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Karlsruhe (1883-84) and the Technical University of Karlsruhe (1886-88), where he studied architecture under Otto Wartha, Josef Durm, and Adolf Weinbrenner, but did not graduate from any school. From 1888 he worked in the Berlin studio of Kayser & von Großheim, designing in the neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque style. With the support of his first wife, he was able to work independently from 1892 and participated in architectural competitions. From 1896 to 1911, he led the studio Billing & Mallebrein, where partners included Josef Mallebrein (1899-1902) and Wilhelm Vittali (1905-1910). From 1901-06, he represented Friedrich Ratzel in lectures at the Technical University in Karlsruhe, where he subsequently served as a full professor of “Civil Engineering and the Design of Urban Residential and Commercial Buildings” from 1907-37. From 1920-23, he was the director of the Baden State Art School in Karlsruhe.
