The book launch of Steel Cities: The Architecture of Logistics in Central and Eastern Europe edited by Kateřina Frejlachová, Miroslav Pazdera, Martin Špičák, and Tadeáš Říha is finally here.
In the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, a certain type of industry is rapidly developing that produces nothing. Storage, packaging, sorting, assembly, and other ancillary processes of production and distribution occur in vast logistics parks, whose area doubles on average every four years. The Steel Cities, as some locals call them, occupy an increasing amount of agricultural land with their hundreds of thousands of square meters, influencing the lives of many inhabitants and creating entirely new relationships. The authors of the publication examine their impact on the landscape and society and reveal the architectural, spatial, legislative, economic, social, and ecological contexts of the logistics system from various perspectives not only in this region. The book depicts logistics centers at three scales: as an architectural-landscape figure the size of a small city, as networks redrawing the map of Europe defining its own territoriality, and as the everyday world of workers inside and residents around them. In addition to texts, the book includes two photo essays and detailed cartographic analyses. Contributors to the book include Rutvica Andrijasevic, Kateřina Frejlachová, Adrian Hyrsz, Tomáš Khel, Jan Kolský, Bob Kuřík, Jesse LeCavalier, Lukáš Likavčan, Petr Mezihorák, Víctor Muñoz Sanz, Tonia Novitz, Miroslav Pazdera, Zdeněk Porcal (Studio Flusser), Tadeáš Říha, Hannah Schling, Pavel Suchan, Daniel Šitera, Martin Špičák, Philip Ursprung, Ina Valkanova, Jan Vopravil.
