At the beginning of June, UMPRUM will once again open to the public. The school-wide exhibition of thesis and semester works ARTSEMESTR summer 2025 will showcase how students respond to studio assignments and how their creations evolve. For the second time in a row, projects will be presented not only in the historic building at Jan Palach Square but also in the modern, open space of the UMPRUM Technology Center on Mikulandská Street. ARTSEMESTR regularly brings a plethora of works from the fields of design, graphics, architecture, and applied and fine arts. Visitors can look forward to diverse themes of both individual and group creations from June 5 to June 10.

ARTSEMESTR traditionally ranks among the most sought-after and widely attended exhibition showcases of the AAAD in Prague. For students, this event is the pinnacle of the semester and an opportunity to demonstrate how their projects respond to the happenings around them and what social or creative questions they pose. All students regularly present their work across departments, making ARTSEMESTR a unique opportunity to gain insight into the current issues of contemporary art and design.   "UMPRUM has long emphasized the relevance of themes related to everyday life, the improvement of the environment around us, and the application of its graduates. This is also true this year as the school celebrates its 140th anniversary. The emphasis on these values, which are also reflected in the students' thesis and semester projects, has been present since the very beginnings of the school. We have highlighted this continuity, among other things, through the lecture series Art Yesterday and Today," says UMPRUM rector Jindřich Vybíral. The ARTSEMESTR exhibition traditionally features both individual works and inter-studio collaborations of various scales and levels. The textile studio's assignments encompass all of these criteria. In their thesis assignment, they return to the roots of the Textile Creation Studio, where students, just as in the past, worked together on a large-format tapestry made from Czech sheep wool for a public space. Additionally, they have collaborated with architect and head of the Architecture II Studio Eva Franch i Gilabert, creating a series of flags as part of the Water Parliaments project that critically inform about the journey of food to our table. This work is exhibited at the Venice Biennale as part of the Catalan pavilion. The UMPRUM architecture studios are also bringing new perspectives on housing and urbanism, addressing socioeconomic and ecological questions. The Architecture I Studio offers paths to make Ústí nad Labem a better place to live. The Architecture II Studio presents a thoughtful speculative design for middle-class housing, while the Architecture III Studio focuses on a new urban vision for an ecosystem fostering the symbiotic coexistence of people, buildings, and nature, including animals. The design studios have established collaborations with Czech glass factories. Specifically, the Furniture and Interior Design Studio prepared a series of objects for the Rückl glassworks reflecting the story of glass, while the Product Design Studio designed beverage collections for the Květná 1794 glassworks. Furthermore, in collaboration with a sorting and processor of used textiles, Diakonie Broumov, they have tackled issues of recycling and further utilization of this material. The Clothing and Footwear Design Studio has also connected with this social cooperative, focusing on the upcycling of selected textile materials. As every year, ARTSEMESTR brings a number of impulses for reflection and bold solutions to various questions and themes. Projects from the studios can now be supported through a voluntary entrance fee.
